Cholai
Bengali / Dokhno dialect with English subtitles
In December 2011, 170 people died after drinking illicit ‘hooch’ in rural West Bengal. Director Arun Roy immersed himself in the country townships for months prior to shooting; and the resulting film is a powerful and caustic comedy with a sharp political critique. Performed in the local Dokhno dialect, Cholai presents a study of moral and cultural values in regional India.
