Join us on the last day of our 10-year anniversary of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2019! The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has always strived to bring the best of Indian cinema here in Melbourne to bridge a connection between the fans and actors whom people love and admire.
To celebrate this milestone, we are screening the highly anticipated Victorian Premiere of Gurinder Chadha’s ground-breaking film ‘Blinded by the light’.

Director of the iconic film Bend It Like Beckham, Gurinder Chadha is a ground-breaking director of culturally diverse cinema. Ms Chadha is known for her light-hearted, comedic films delicately touching on the identity confusion of many non-residential Indian’s (NRI’s) and what they face living outside of India. She has made her career adapting English classics through a modern lens. In Bride and Prejudice, her 2004 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classics, she injected a Bollywood twist, adding a multicultural layer to a story that speaks to the complexities of family expectations. Her upbringing in an Indian household, in a very English environment, has led for her content to be known as very relatable, enlightening and refreshing. Most recently she has directed a T.V series; Beecham House, successfully bringing Indian cultural inspired drama to prime time British T.V.
We are ecstatic to screen it at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne as the Closing Night Film.

Synopsis: It's 1987 in Luton, a factory town north of London besieged by racial and economic turmoil, where Pakistani British teenager Javed finds himself yearning to follow his creative passions as the means to escape from both his rundown hometown and the rules of his very traditional father. As he unexpectedly discovers the music of American rock legend Bruce Springsteen and his lyrics about working class life, Javed finds not only a cathartic parallel to his own life in Luton but the inspiration and courage to stand up and challenge familial and cultural expectations, discovering his own voice and navigating his dreams to become a writer and transform his life.
