Rima Das

Rima Das, a trailblazing Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer, is renowned for her compelling storytelling and evocative cinematic style. Her works offer profound insights into rural life and intimate portrayals of human emotions, earning her international acclaim. Her breakout film "Village Rockstars" (2017) marked a global breakthrough as she single-handedly directed, wrote, produced, and served as the cinematographer. Shot on a shoestring budget with non-professional actors from her own village, the film won numerous awards and became India's official entry to the 91st Academy Awards. Notably, it was also the first Assamese film to be submitted for Oscar consideration.

In 2018, GQ India named Das as one of the 50 most influential young Indians of 2018. Das's films authentically depict the struggles and dreams of marginalized communities, especially in Assam's rural landscapes. With subsequent works "Bulbul Can Sing" (2018), and "Tora's Husband" (2022), Rima Das continues to showcase her powerful storytelling.

Das champions the cause of gender equality as the Brand Ambassador for the Toronto International Film Festival's 'Share Her Journey' campaign. She has also been on the jury of Berlin International Film Festival Generation 14plus, Mumbai International Film Festival, Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and Zlin Film Festival for Children & Youth. Rima Das has also directed one out of the four films for the opening night at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2024 titled "My Melbourne". Rima Das remains an influential figure in the Indian film industry, inspiring aspiring filmmakers with her genuine narratives and mastery of her craft, establishing her as a visionary filmmaker pushing boundaries to tell compelling stories.

We are thrilled to welcome her at IFFM 2024!
